How to Jump Start Another Car

When your car battery dies, you should be able to use jumper cables to start it up and get over to the auto shop. While you can always depend on a good Samaritan to stop, you should have your own jump start kit that can help you out in a pinch. However, how do you hook the cables up properly? This is the next step in owning a vehicle, especially one that requires some attention due to its age.

You can place both vehicles in park or neutral, then shut off the engine. With jumper cables in hand, place one of the red clips on the terminal marked positive (+) and then attach the other red lips to the positive terminal on the helper's car. The black clips go on the negative (-) terminal. Make sure that you are connecting the right color to the right terminal.
